Bersama Feyenoord, bakatnya mentas dengan cepat. Ia akhirnya debut di tim senior Feyenoord pada tahun 1993 saat ia masih berusia 18 tahun.

Bersama Rangers-lah bakatnya semakin bersinar sehingga ia direkrut Arsene Wenger ke Arsenal untuk menggantikan Emmanuel Petit, meski karirnya banyak diterpa cedera selama di Arsenal.
